Do we refuse charity as the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, refused it, or is refusing it considered arrogance and a lack of humility before Allah?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not accept charity (sadaqah) because it was forbidden for him and his family, and because it was considered the 'filth of people.' However, he would accept gifts no matter what they were.

As for others besides the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, it is permissible for them to accept charity. Imam An-Nawawi even went as far as to state that accepting it is desirable.

Accepting charity is not obligatory. If a person refuses it out of fear of being indebted (minnah) or because they are not among the deserving recipients, there is no sin upon them.
