Is it permissible to return or refuse to accept charity when we are well-off?

If someone gives you money as charity or a gift without you asking for it, accept it and do not refuse it, even if you are wealthy. This is in accordance with the Prophet's (peace be upon him) hadith to 'Umar: "Take it. If something comes to you from this money and you are neither aspiring for it nor asking for it, then take it. As for what does not come to you in this manner, do not let your soul pursue it." And due to his (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever is offered a kindness by his brother, without asking for it or eagerly anticipating it, let him accept it and not refuse it, for it is a provision that Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, has brought to him." The correct and well-known opinion, adopted by the majority, is that accepting money is recommended, except for a ruler's gift, which is permissible if it is not predominantly from unlawful sources and there is no legal impediment.
