Is the meaning of the Holy Quran clear, and are most of its verses definitive, so that its reader can understand it?

The muhkamat (clear and decisive) verses constitute the majority and most numerous verses of the Holy Quran. They are called so because they form the bulk of the Book and are the refuge for its people in times of need, just as the Arabs refer to what encompasses the majority of something as its "mother" (umm). Understanding the meanings of the Quran is not clear to everyone, and it may require books of tafsir (definition) (exegesis) and asking people of knowledge. Even the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), despite their eloquence, would refer to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to ask him about meanings they did not understand, and sometimes confusion would arise for them. This indicates our great need for people of knowledge in understanding the Quran. It is dangerous to interpret the Quran without knowledge or based solely on personal opinion.
