What is the ruling on eating chicken that has been gassed unconscious before slaughter, after the Australian National Imams Council issued a fatwa prohibiting it, given that some companies claim its permissibility? And what is the ruling on eating chicken that is fed animal protein which may contain meat or offal from poultry and pigs? And what is the ruling on purchasing other meats from the same slaughterhouses that sell this chicken and use the same equipment?

The fundamental principle is that the animal should be slaughtered without stunning it with electricity or anesthetizing it. Slaughtering in the prescribed Islamic manner, while observing its etiquette, is sufficient. If stunning or anesthetizing leads to the death of the animal before slaughter, then it is unlawful (haram) because it becomes carrion. However, if it does not lead to its death, and there remains stable life in it before the lawful slaughter, then the slaughtered animal is permissible (halal). It is not permissible to stun poultry with an electric shock if it leads to the death of a percentage of them before slaughter. However, what is slaughtered after being stunned by a mixture of carbon dioxide or a captive bolt pistol is not unlawful if it did not die before slaughter. If scientific bodies issue a fatwa that certain slaughtered animals are not permissible, then it is not permissible to eat them. Purchasing meat slaughtered in a lawful manner is permissible, even if it is from shops that also sell poultry slaughtered in an unlawful manner. Feeding poultry non-impure animal protein is not blameworthy.
