What is the ruling on using medicines that contain alcohol, and is it permissible to prescribe them to patients?

It is not permissible to mix medicine with intoxicating alcohol. However, it is permissible to use it if the proportion of alcohol is small, such that its effect is not apparent in the medicine's color, taste, or smell. Otherwise, it is forbidden to use anything mixed with it.
