Is it Islamically permissible to use medicines and medical preparations in dentistry and surgery, such as sterilizing agents and mouthwashes, that contain a small or large percentage of alcohol?

Intoxicating alcohol is considered Khamr (wine/intoxicant) and impure by the majority of scholars. It is not permissible to mix medicine with it. However, it is permissible to use medicine mixed with it if the proportion of alcohol is very small and its effect is not apparent in the color, taste, or smell of the medicine. Otherwise, its use is prohibited. There is no known sharia oversight over medications.
