Is it Islamically permissible to consume foods that contain a small percentage of alcohol for diabetics and those on a diet?
It is not permissible to add any percentage of alcohol to patients' food, due to the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "That which intoxicates in large quantities is unlawful in small quantities."
The preponderant view is that it is not permissible to use medicine that contains a percentage of alcohol, due to the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to Tariq ibn Suwayd al-Ju'fi when he asked him about (wine): "It is not a medicine, but rather a disease."
However, if necessity dictates the use of a medicine containing a percentage of alcohol, and there is no alcohol-free alternative, then its use is permissible to the extent of the necessity.
