Who must fast sixty consecutive days, and how does a woman fast sixty consecutive days despite her menstruation, and what are the rulings for this expiation, especially for women?
Fasting for two consecutive months is obligatory in three cases: accidental killing, when one is unable to free a believing slave; ẓihār (a pre-Islamic form of divorce by which a man likens his wife to his mother), when one is unable to free a slave; and sexual intercourse during daylight hours in , when one is unable to free a slave. Whoever is obligated to fast consecutively must not interrupt it except for a legitimate Shar’i excuse such as illness or menstruation. In such cases, they should resume from where they left off before the excuse. If they interrupt it without a valid excuse, they must restart the fasting. A woman is not liable for expiation for sexual intercourse during daylight hours in Ramadan, nor is there a ẓihār obligation upon her by consensus.
