What should a person do who discovers that the one bearing his name is not his father, and that his real father is so-and-so as a result of adultery, bearing in mind the Hadith: "Do not make them averse to their fathers," and how can he justify this to his siblings and to society, and what should he do with this shame?
This person is attributed to the man on whose bed he was born, due to the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "The child belongs to the bed, and for the fornicator is the stone." What those who spread his attribution to someone other than the one on whose bed he was born did is considered slander, and he, his mother, and the man to whom they attributed him have the right to prove this slander to inflict the prescribed punishment on the slanderers, which is eighty lashes. Allah (the Most High) said: "And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses - lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept their testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient." This person should not pay attention to what people circulate, as impugning lineage is among the matters of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance). The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "Four things from the matters of Jahiliyyah will remain in my Ummah (nation), and they will not abandon them: boasting about ancestry, impugning lineage, seeking rain by means of stars, and wailing." He must be confident in his attribution to his father, and whoever wishes to attack his honor has the right to file a slander lawsuit. Whoever wishes to get rid of their worries should fear Allah Almighty. The saying "Do not cause them to disown their fathers" has not been reported as a Hadith, and perhaps what is meant is the verse: "Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah."
