Is the interpretation of dreams based on popular books, such as interpreting cooked fish differently from raw fish, or milk in another way, and so on?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, divided visions into three categories: a righteous vision, which is glad tidings from Allah; a vision of distress from Satan; and a vision of what one speaks to himself about.

The righteous vision is a part of prophecy, and it is forbidden to interpret it in a way that contradicts its correct interpretation. The science of interpreting visions is not limited to books but rather depends on understanding circumstances, times, sagacity, and knowledge of meanings, because the interpretation of visions differs according to individuals, eras, and circumstances. The dreamer must distinguish his visions: if they are from Satan or self-talk, they should not be interpreted. If they are righteous, then people of knowledge should strive to interpret them without relying solely on books.
