Is a nephew required to support his bachelor uncle who has no one to care for him when he is ill or in need of money?
The paternal uncle is among the closest kin upon whom maintenance is obligatory if they are poor, without wealth or income, and if the provider is capable of providing, meaning they have what to spend in excess of their own needs. Scholars have stipulated that maintenance for relatives is obligatory upon anyone who would inherit from the needy person, but there is a disagreement regarding this condition. The preponderant opinion is that maintenance is obligatory for a needy relative even if there is no mutual inheritance between them.
Furthermore, taking care of the paternal uncle during his illness and attending to his needs is among the greatest acts of righteousness and strengthening kinship ties. This can be done through financial support, service, visitation, or other forms of benevolence.
