What is the ruling on searching for a ticket with a lower number to bypass the queue and reduce waiting time?

The fundamental principle is that a person should adhere to their turn and not precede others. Numbered tickets are for organization and identifying who came first; they are not an end in themselves. The right of the one who came first is forfeited if they abandon their turn. Imam An-Nawawi states that if someone sits in a place for a transaction and then leaves it, their right is nullified. Based on this, a person is not allowed to take a number that is ahead of their rightful turn, as this constitutes injustice to those who preceded them.
