What is the ruling on holding condolence gatherings for three days after a death? Is listening to or reciting the Qur’an during these gatherings, and likewise delivering sermons as a reminder for patience, considered an innovation (bid‘ah)? Is supplicating for the deceased collectively after washing the body an innovation, or must each individual supplicate on their own?

Sitting to receive condolences is considered reprehensible by many scholars, especially if it involves the family of the deceased preparing food for those offering condolences. As for gathering to recite the Quran for the deceased, it is an innovation (bid'ah). However, exhortation (wa'z) in a mourning gathering is permissible as long as it is not taken as a habit, and collective supplication (du'a) is also permissible if it is incidental and not a regular practice.
