What is the ruling on people gathering after burying the deceased, setting up a mourning tent (sawan), bringing a reciter to recite the Quran while they listen and drink tea and coffee, then feeding people food, and then they depart?

Scholars have differed concerning the ruling on gathering for condolences, and the relied-upon opinion is that it is disliked, due to the renewal of grief it entails, the burden of expense, and its being an innovation.

As for hiring someone to recite for the deceased, it is a reprehensible innovation, not practiced by the Salaf, nor recommended by the imams. There is no reward for its reciter, nor for the deceased.

Therefore, gathering over food or drink for condolences is disliked, and this dislikeness increases if it involves hiring someone to recite the Qur'an for the deceased.
