Is the fast of one who had intercourse with his wife in Ramadan before the dawn adhan, and then the muezzin called the adhan while they were still in that state, and they stopped before the adhan finished, valid? And does it necessitate making up the fast or offering expiation?

If the muezzin calls the adhan at the break of dawn (Fajr), then one must abstain from all things that break the fast immediately upon hearing the adhan. However, if the muezzin calls the adhan before Fajr, or if you are in doubt, then there is no obligation upon you, for Allah has permitted eating, drinking, and intercourse until Fajr becomes clear. And whoever engages in intercourse with the Fajr adhan out of ignorance of the ruling, there is no expiation (kaffarah) upon him, but he must make up that day (qada'), repent, and seek forgiveness.
