What are the foundations of miracles in our present age, especially concerning the miracles mentioned by the Shiites in Karbala?

The purpose of miracles is extraordinary occurrences that serve as a sign of righteousness and being on the truth. They are called "karamah" (a miraculous favor) if they happen to those who are not prophets. To distinguish karamah from magic and sorcery, the following conditions must be met:

1. It must be proven by direct observation or by an authentic chain of transmission (sanad); for many alleged karamat are mere superstitions and myths. 2. Allah must bestow it upon someone who is pious and adheres to His commands. It does not occur to those who violate the Shari'ah (Islamic law). What happens to violators is not a karamah but rather a form of "istidraj" (being gradually led astray) or an act of devils.

A person's righteousness is not known by extraordinary occurrences, but by comparing their state and words with the Quran and Sunnah. Whatever conforms to them is guidance, and whatever contradicts them is misguidance.

A Muslim must protect himself and his family by choosing righteous companions and avoiding people of corruption and misguidance.
