What is your guidance for someone suffering from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), to the extent that it leads to missing prayers or extending Wudu (ablution) and Ghusl (ritual bath) for hours, and who finds extreme difficulty in applying the advice of scholars to abandon these obsessions? Is it permissible for him to abandon prayer, or to suffice with Wudu or Tayammum (dry ablution) and pray even with the presence of impurity or major ritual impurity, based on His (Allah's) saying: "And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction" (Quran 2:195) and His saying: "Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity" (Quran 2:286)?
There is no cure for obsessive thoughts except to continuously strive against them and ignore them. When relieving oneself, do not prolong your stay after finishing, and do not pay attention to the obsessive thought of something exiting. In ablution (Wudu'), wash each limb once, twice, or thrice, and do not exceed that. Do not be hesitant to touch anything, no matter how much Satan whispers to you that it is impure, for the default state of things is purity. In prayer, say the Takbir once and proceed with your prayer; do not repeat anything, and do not think about repeating the prayer after finishing it. Continuing this struggle will eliminate the obsessive thoughts. It is recommended to consult the "Consultations" section of the website and to see a trusted psychiatrist for assistance with medication.
