How can one reconcile leaving university for fear of falling into sin, and continuing to study while working, taking into consideration the Hikam Ata'iyya (Ata's Wisdom) which states: "Your desire for detachment while Allah has established you in the means is a hidden lust, and your desire for the means while Allah has established you in detachment is a degradation from high resolve"?

The most important things a Muslim must safeguard are his religion, his morals, and his honor. Mingling with women in universities or elsewhere is among the greatest things that can mar and affect these matters. Therefore, one must avoid mingling with them, especially if it is possible to continue studying without attending, by utilizing educational CDs, specialized websites, or asking students. There is no contradiction between studying and working; rather, combining them is preferable to idleness. If you are not in need of work and staying at home helps improve your academic level, there is no harm, but it is better to allocate a part of your time to studying Islamic sciences.
