Is it permissible to abandon one's studies for the sake of Allah, knowing that the questioner has recently become committed to religious observance and finds nothing in their studies but what displeases Allah?

If the study itself is haram (forbidden), then it must be abandoned immediately for repentance to be accepted. However, if it is originally permissible but accompanied by prohibitions such as mixing (of genders), then if the prohibition can be avoided, for example, by studying externally (without attending mixed classes), then it is permissible to continue. If the prohibition cannot be avoided, and the student is compelled or in dire need of this study for his livelihood, then it is permissible for him to continue while striving to avoid the prohibitions and seeking forgiveness. But if he is not compelled or in dire need, then he is obligated to abandon it.
