A wife must obey her husband in marital relations and related matters, and in raising, educating, and cleaning their children within customary limits. There should be no harshness towards the children, and it is permissible to strike them for discipline, provided it is not severe. If the wife does not obey her husband, he should admonish her, then abandon her in bed and in speech for three days. If this does not work, he may strike her a non-severe blow, avoiding the face and dangerous areas. If these means of reconciliation are ineffective, divorce is the last resort, although it is disliked without cause due to its consequences, especially for the children. The foundation of the marital relationship is affection, mercy, and understanding.
