Is it permissible for my wife to abort the fetus in its fifth week due to her psychological condition and her attempt to commit suicide?
Scholars have differed concerning the ruling on aborting a fetus before forty days. The fatwa adopted by us is the prohibition of aborting it before forty days. Therefore, it is not permissible to abort the fetus in the fifth week. The husband must exert his utmost effort to prevent the abortion unless it would lead to a greater harm. If he finds no way, then he is absolved. As for the wife, if she is sane and acting of her own free will, it is not permissible for her to abort the pregnancy unless she fears harm or hardship. In that case, she may act upon the opinion of those who permitted aborting the fetus before forty days.
