The question

Is it permissible for an unemployed father, a resident who possesses a sum of money, to deposit it in a bank and use its interest to provide for his children, given that he is unemployed, has a physical disability that prevents him from working, and has no one trustworthy to invest his money for him? And does this fall under the Almighty's saying: "But whoever is compelled – neither intending wrongdoing nor transgressing – there is no sin upon him"?

The answer

Banks are of two types: Islamic banks, with which it is permissible to deal, invest money, and benefit from their profits. One should strive to choose the best among them. And riba-based banks (usurious banks), with which it is impermissible for a Muslim to invest their money in order to benefit from their forbidden interest. Their need for investment does not permit them to engage in usury, and permissible means of investment are numerous. Allah the Almighty says: "Satan threatens you with poverty and enjoins upon you immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allah is all-Encompassing and knowing." (Al-Baqarah: 268).
