The question

What do the scholars of Quranic orthography, such as Abu Amr al-Dani, mean by their statement, regarding the verse, "Say: Who delivers you from the darkness of the land and the sea, when you call upon Him humbly and secretly: 'If He delivers us from this, we will surely be among the thankful'" (Quran 6:63): "And in it, in the mus'hafs of the people of Kufa: 'لئن أنجينا من هذه' (la'in anjayna min hadhih), with a yaa' and without a taa', and in all other mus'hafs: 'لئن انجيتنا' (la'in anjaytana) with a yaa' and a taa'," given the absence of a yaa' in "أنجانا" (anjani) in the Kufan mus'haf or readings?

The answer

The رسم (orthography/script) of the Mushaf originated during the era of Uthman ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him. It was based on specific rules (deletion, addition, hamza, substitution, joining and separation, and instances with two variant readings). Uthman sent six copies of the Mushaf to various regions, and these are the foundational source for the science of رسم. Scholars have authored books describing how words were written in these copies.

The disagreement concerning the word "أنجيتنا" (anjaytana) stems from a difference in the رسم of the Masahif between the Kufans and others, and a difference in its recitation among the reciters. The Kufans recited it as "أنجانا" (anjana), with an alif after the jim and without a ya or ta, while the rest recited it as "أنجيتنا" (anjaytana), with a ya and ta and without an alif.
