Are the phrases "Ahmad was alone in narrating it," "Ibn Majah was alone in narrating it," and "was alone in narrating it" in general, and "it was only narrated through this channel," and "no one narrated it except," and "according to the conditions of Al-Bukhari and Muslim" or one of them, definitive statements about the authenticity or weakness of the hadith, or are they merely for clarifying the chains of narration and their narrators?

The phrases of "singular narration" (tafarrud) that scholars mention in their books, such as "Ahmad narrated it singularly," mean one of two things: either absolute singular narration, meaning no one else narrates it, or relative singular narration, meaning a specific narrator narrates it from a specific narrator, to the exclusion of others, even if there are other chains of transmission.

Absolute singular narration is when a single narrator narrates something to the exclusion of all other narrators. It is considered sound (sahih) if the narrator is a precise, accurate preserver of traditions (hafiz). It is considered good (hasan) if the narrator falls short of this degree. It is considered anomalous (shadh) or denounced (munkar) if it contradicts the narration of someone more accurate than him, or if the narrator is far from the degree of preservation and accuracy.

Relative singular narration is that which is relative to a specific characteristic, such as being restricted to a trustworthy narrator, or a specific region, or a specific narrator. It does not imply weakness unless it refers to the singular narration of one person from that region, in which case it becomes a form of absolute singular narration.

Neither type of singular narration phrases necessitates validating or weakening the hadith. Rather, the condition of the narrators who narrated these hadiths singularly must be examined. These phrases merely indicate the manner in which the hadith was transmitted, in terms of whether it was narrated singularly or not.
