Is it true that Abraham remained in the fire and Jonah in the belly of the whale for forty days?

There is no way to know how long Abraham (peace be upon him) stayed in the fire, nor how long Jonah (peace be upon him) stayed in the belly of the whale, because the Holy Quran and authentic Sunnah did not specify that, and what was narrated by some of the Salaf regarding this cannot be relied upon. Imam al-Tabari said: "Knowledge that does not benefit, and ignorance that does not harm," and "Belief in the apparent revelation is an obligation, and anything beyond that, we are relieved of the burden of seeking its knowledge."
