Is it permissible to perform tayammum with vessels made of earthen materials (such as clay and pottery) or on painted walls?

It is permissible to perform tayammum (definition) with anything that has risen from the earth's surface, such as dust, mud, stone, sand, and pottery, due to the Almighty's saying: (Then perform tayammum with pure earth). It is permissible to perform tayammum with anything that is of the same kind as the earth, such as dust, sand, pebbles, as well as with a smooth stone, a plastered wall, and earthenware made of pure clay, or if one strikes his hand on a garment and dust rises from it. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah chose the permissibility of tayammum with other than dust from the earth's components if dust is not found. Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen permitted tayammum on a wall if it is built from earth, such as sun-dried mud bricks. However, if it is covered with wood or paint, tayammum is not performed on it unless there is dust on it. As for carpets, it is permissible to perform tayammum on them if there is dust on them, otherwise not. In summary, it is permissible to perform tayammum with a wall or vessels made of clay or pottery as long as they are not painted. If they are painted, tayammum is not valid unless there is dust on them. A Muslim can also place dust or sand in a vessel and perform tayammum from it.
