What is the ruling on taking a loan from the Saudi Credit and Saving Bank to open a commercial shop?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible to borrow if it is a benevolent loan (qard hasan) that does not stipulate an increase. However, borrowing with the stipulation of interest or a penalty for late payment is usury (riba), which is forbidden by scholarly consensus. Based on what is stated in the bank's general system, if the bank offers interest-free loans to small and emerging businesses, as well as to artisans and professionals, and also interest-free social loans to those with limited incomes, then there is no harm in borrowing from it, provided that interest in all its forms is absent.
