How can authenticity and modernity be integrated?

Combining authenticity and modernity is possible in Islam, as it encompasses elements of both permanence and flexibility. The objectives, goals, religious, and moral values represent constants that do not change. However, human interactions in various aspects of life are characterized by flexibility due to changing human circumstances. This has allowed for ijtihad (independent reasoning); what has an explicit text (from the Quran or Sunnah) does not permit ijtihad, but what has no explicit text is guided by maslahah (public interest). This is evidenced by the conduct of the Rightly Guided Caliphs and the fatwas of the imams, and scholars of the Muslim nation continue to exercise ijtihad regarding new issues that arise in every era.
