Is a Muslim rewarded for forgiving an innovator (mubtadi‘) or a disbeliever, by analogy with his reward for forgiving an unjust Muslim?

Forgiveness is among the noble virtues that a Muslim should embody, whether the forgiven person is a Muslim or a non-Muslim, righteous or unrighteous. The evidence from the Holy Quran is general and does not specify forgiveness, such as His (Allah's) saying: "So whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is due from Allah." (Quran 42:40), and His saying: "But whoever is patient and forgives, indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination." (Quran 42:43), and His saying: "But if you pardon and overlook and forgive - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." (Quran 64:14), and His saying: "Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant." (Quran 7:199). The Prophet (peace be upon him) forgave the disbelievers of Mecca after the conquest, and forgiving a non-Muslim may be a means of inviting them to Islam. However, forgiveness is good and encouraged if it leads to reconciliation, not if it results in corruption and harm.
