Is refraining from reading from the Holy Quran and limiting oneself to reciting it by heart during free time considered abandoning the Holy Quran?
There is no harm in repeating verses and short surahs from memory or by looking, with presence of heart and reflection on the meaning, for this is among the best types of remembrance (dhikr), as stated in the Hadith: "Your tongue will not cease to be moist with the remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic." Allah the Exalted has warned against abandoning the Qur'an, which means forsaking its recitation, its implementation, and the application of its rulings. Some scholars have gone so far as to say that a reciter should complete the recitation of the Qur'an at least twice a year, and it is disliked to delay completing it for more than forty days without a valid excuse.
