Is it permissible to dispose of a sum of money that exceeds the original bank deposit by placing it in a mosque or giving it to the poor?
This benefit is from usury and must be disposed of by spending it on the welfare of Muslims or by giving it to the poor and needy. There is no harm in placing it in mosques to be spent on their needs, such as lighting or furnishings. Al-Ghazali mentioned that unlawful money whose owner is unknown should be spent on general Muslim welfare, such as bridges and mosques, otherwise, it should be given as charity to the poor.
