What is the izar in Islamic Sharia?

The 'izar' (lower garment) is what is tied around the waist, and the 'rida'' (upper garment) is what is worn over the shoulders. This linguistic meaning is what is intended in the religious texts, such as the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "The izar of the believer is to the middle of his shins, then to his ankles. Whatever is lower than that is in the Fire." Wearing an izar is not obligatory; rather, what is obligatory is to wear what covers the 'awrah' (private parts).
