The answer

For a successful marital life, a girl must choose a husband of good character and religious commitment, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If someone whose religion and character you approve of proposes to you, then marry him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption." Indeed, a man of religious commitment and good character, if he loves, he honors, and if he dislikes, he does not wrong.

To ascertain the young man's situation, one must inquire from trustworthy individuals who know him well. After consultation, perform Istikhara (prayer for guidance) and entrust the matter to Allah.

It is obligatory to sever the relationship with the young man because he is a stranger (non-mahram), and communication between engaged couples is not permissible before the marriage contract, as engagement does not permit this. The repentant young man must conceal his past and not speak of it, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "All of my ummah will be forgiven except those who publicize their sins."
