The question

Is it established that a brother- and sister-through-nursing relationship exists between a young man and a young woman who have treated each other on this basis, given the dispute over the number of nursings required to establish the relationship (five nursings or three), and that one of the nursing mothers does not recall the exact number but affirms the fulfillment of the five-nursing condition, while the other is certain of only four nursings and is unsure about the number of nursings per single feeding session?

The answer

Prohibition through breastfeeding is established if two conditions are met: the first is that it occurs within the first two years (of the child's life), and the second is that the number of breastfeedings is five or more. If there is doubt about the number of breastfeedings, the prohibition is not established. The reference for this is the nursing woman; if she is certain of five (feedings), the prohibition is established. However, they should not marry, because some scholars did not stipulate a number for the breastfeedings, and whoever avoids doubtful matters has cleared himself in regard to his religion and his honor.
