Is spitting in the direction of the Qibla considered a sin, and is the one who does so punished if it was unintentional?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade spitting towards the Qibla in the mosque during prayer, because it involves communion with Allah and the presence of the angel on one's right. Scholars have inferred from this the absolute prohibition of spitting towards the Qibla in the mosque, whether the worshipper is praying or not. Spitting towards it during prayer or on the Qibla wall is considered a graver sin.

As for spitting outside of prayer and the mosque, scholars have differed on this matter. Some have permitted it, while others have forbidden it. A Hadith has been reported that absolutely prohibits spitting towards the Qibla, and it has been authentically reported that some Companions and Tabi'in avoided spitting to their right.

The most evident view is that the prohibition of spitting towards the Qibla is specific to prayer. It is preferable to avoid it outside of prayer if possible, and avoiding spitting to one's right is strongly emphasized.
