What is the ruling on spitting in the street, especially if a person suffers from an illness that causes him to spit frequently?

It is recommended to care for cleanliness and good manners, and spitting is repulsive. There is no text prohibiting spitting in the street, and the default is permissibility. However, if the disease is contagious and spreads through spitting, then spitting in the street is prohibited unless it is buried, based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” It is disliked to spit towards the Qibla or to the right, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever spits towards the Qibla will come on the Day of Judgment with his spittle between his eyes.”
