What is the ruling on eating the food of the People of the Book, such as chicken slaughtered in countries like Britain and Brazil, and what is the ruling on what is slaughtered in secular countries like France and labeled on its carton "slaughtered according to Islamic rites"?

The basic principle concerning the food of the People of the Book is that it is permissible, as Allah the Almighty says: (And the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you). This is unless it is known that they violate one of the conditions for the permissibility of eating their slaughtered animals, such as if they dedicate it to other than Allah when slaughtering, or if they do not cut from the slaughtered animal what is required to be cut, or if they kill it by electrocution or drowning, and so on. In such cases, it is not permissible, whether they write "Slaughtered according to Islamic Law" on it or write nothing at all.
