Are the slaughtered animals of the People of the Book permissible in our time, especially given opinions that the Quranic description of the People of the Book no longer applies, and that their method of slaughter has changed (such as electric stunning), and taking into account the inability to trust their word?

Allah has permitted the slaughtered animals of the People of the Book, Jews and Christians, as Allah Almighty says: "And the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you." This is the original ruling. However, if it is known that their method of slaughter does not conform to Islamic law, or that the slaughterer among them is an atheist, then their slaughtered meat is not lawful for a Muslim. It is not a condition for a Muslim to be present to verify the correctness of their slaughtering, as they are to be believed in this matter as long as they are People of the Book. Some scholars have even gone so far as to permit their slaughtered animals as long as they are lawful in their religion, even if they do not conform to our method of ritual slaughter.
