As long as the amount paid by the participant in the auction exceeds the actual cost of the message, it falls under Maysir (gambling), because it is a definite loss met by a potential gain. This type of trickery is forbidden, and the merchant's intention behind it is to achieve a profit higher than the price of the commodity through the participants' messages. Therefore, it is a forbidden deception and fraud, and participation in it is not permissible.
