Must a girl who has not reached puberty, is fifteen years old, and suffers from a terminal illness, fast?
Fasting is obligatory for every adult, sane, capable Muslim. Puberty is recognized by the completion of 15 lunar years, or by nocturnal emission, or by the growth of coarse hair around the private parts. For a woman, menstruation is an additional sign. The Shafi'is, Hanbalis, and Muhammad and Abu Yusuf from the Hanafis agreed that the age of puberty is 15 years.
The Malikis believe that puberty is at the completion of 18 years. Abu Hanifa believes that puberty for a boy is at 18 years and for a girl at 17 years.
Therefore, if a girl reaches 15 years of age without showing other signs of puberty, fasting becomes obligatory for her.
If she is unable to fast, or if fasting would harm her, doctors must be consulted to determine if her illness is curable. If her recovery is hoped for, she should break her fast and make up for it later. If her recovery is not hoped for, she should break her fast and feed a needy person for each day, without making up the fast.
