Is it permissible for someone who suffers from chapped lips and their discoloration to white upon contact with water, which causes difficulty in performing ablution, to perform tayammum?
If the lips are harmed by water during ablution (wudu'), one must wash what is possible of the face and the remaining ablutionary limbs, then perform tayammum (dry ablution) for the part of the lip that could not be washed and the area close to it. It is permissible to perform tayammum before or after wudu', but it is not permissible to abandon wudu' and suffice with tayammum. This ruling also applies to ghusl (ritual bath). A person with a wound or ailment on an ablutionary limb has four levels:
1. If it is exposed and washing does not harm it: washing is obligatory.
2. If it is exposed and washing harms it, but wiping does not: wiping is obligatory.
3. If it is exposed and washing and wiping harm it: tayammum for it is obligatory along with washing the rest of the limbs.
4. If it is covered with a necessary bandage: wiping over the covering is obligatory.
If the wound cannot be washed or wiped, tayammum for it is obligatory. Whoever prays and forgets to perform tayammum for a wound, must perform tayammum then resume the prayer.
