What was the fate of the remaining polytheists who fought in the Battle of Badr, whose number ranged between nine hundred and one thousand men, while the number of those killed was only seventy and those captured was only seventy?

It is narrated from Umar ibn Al-Khattab that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, supplicated fervently to his Lord on the day of Badr, pleading that this band of Muslims not be annihilated, lest Allah no longer be worshipped on earth. Thereupon, Allah Almighty revealed: (When you sought help from your Lord, and He answered you, “Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand angels, following one another.”)

It is also reported from Ibn Abbas that Gabriel, peace be upon him, advised the Prophet to take a handful of dust and throw it at the faces of the polytheists. Consequently, every one of them had dust enter their eyes, nostrils, and mouths, and they turned and fled. This aligns with Allah’s saying: (The hosts will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in flight]) and His saying: (And you threw not when you threw, but it was Allah who threw). And Allah cast terror into the hearts of the disbelievers and granted victory to the Muslims.
