The answer

Non-existence is not a thing in the first place, by the consensus of the wise among nations. It has no external existence, nor does it exist in the mind. It cannot be an effect of an agent, nor can it be said to be from Allah. Negation of quiddity is negation of existence, and quiddity cannot be conceived except with existence. Therefore, the statement: "It contains non-existence" is incorrect, and the correct statement is: "It contains nothing." And the statement: "Non-existence exists with the Divine Essence" is incorrect, and the correct statement is: "Allah was, and there was nothing else besides Him." This is consistent with the Prophet's (peace be upon him) when he was asked about the beginning of this affair, and he said: "Allah was, and there was nothing else besides Him."
