Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about an action that would admit him into Paradise and distance him from the Hellfire. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) answered him by saying that he should worship Allah and not associate anything with Him, establish the prayer, give the zakat, fast Ramadan, and perform the Hajj to the House. Then he guided him to the gates of goodness: Fasting is a shield, charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire, and a man's prayer in the depths of the night. And he informed him that the head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is prayer, and the peak of its hump is jihad. Then he clarified to him that the control of all that lies in guarding the tongue, warning against the harvests of tongues that cast people into the Hellfire.
