What is the ruling on using Dead Sea products?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is widespread among people that it is impermissible to benefit from what comes out of the Dead Sea because it is the region where the people of Lot were punished, but there is no Shariah (Islamic legal) proof for that. The more preponderant view is that a region of punishment should not have its water drunk from nor should anything from it be benefited from except out of necessity. As for the Dead Sea, the default for things is permissibility, and there is no specific Shariah proof to assign it a special ruling. Therefore, it is permissible to benefit from what comes out of it, such as salt and the like, as long as it is not forbidden for another reason. It is also permissible to use it in treating some diseases if medically proven, and to bathe in it if it is free from forbidden mixing and nudity.
