Is the engagement period sufficient for getting to know the temperaments of the engaged couple, and does tranquility for the wife come before marriage or after it?

The suitor is a stranger to his fiancée. Therefore, it is not permissible for him to be alone with her or to speak with her without Islamic legal bounds under the pretext of getting to know her. Rather, he should inquire about her from trustworthy people and seek Allah's guidance (istikharah). If the woman is religious and of good character, and the suitor seeks Allah's help and supplicates to Him, then proposes through those whom her family approves, and she agrees, then praise be to Allah. If not, then he should look for someone else, for Allah may replace her with someone better. As for tranquility and affection, they may come after marriage and increase with good companionship.
