If the suitor is religious and of good character, and he loves the fiancée, and she reciprocates his love, then she should perform Istikhara (prayer for guidance), seek consultation, and rely on Allah. If her heart is content with the marriage, then he should propose to her guardian. She must be careful to avoid any relationship between them before the marriage contract. As for the father, she must honor him, obey him, and be patient with him, for obedience to parents is obligatory unless they command disobedience. If there is estrangement between the parents, she should try to resolve it, either directly or through family, and she should avoid actions that might be misinterpreted or hurt either of them.
