The question

Is it permissible for a suitor, who perceives an emotional coldness in his fiancée during the Sharia-compliant viewing and refuses unlawful mixing before marriage, to ask her about the extent of love, affection, mercy, and the exchange of kind words between them after marriage, fearing an emotionally dry life and in pursuit of the affection and mercy mentioned in His (Allah’s) saying, the Most High: "And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect"?

The answer

We thank the suitor for his keenness to observe the Sharia rulings in his interactions with his fiancée. There is no harm in him asking her about the emotional aspect within the bounds of Islamic manners. It is preferable that this be a reminder of the importance of fulfilling this aspect in married life. The suitor must pay attention to what is more important, which is inquiring about her religiosity and character, and performing Istikhara, as this is among the best catalysts for the continuity and stability of married life.
