What is the ruling on someone who swore not to masturbate for a week, with the condition of fasting three days if he did it, then he did it and did not fast, then he swore not to do it again for a week, with the condition of fasting four days if he did it, then he did it and did not fast? Does he owe two expiations (fasting seven days) or one expiation (fasting three days)?

The first صيغة (formulation) is considered an oath (yameen); its violation (al-hinth) does not occur unless one reverts to what they swore to abandon within a week, coupled with not fasting for three days. In this case, an expiation (kaffarah) becomes obligatory. This ruling also applies to the second صيغة. In summary, if one does not fast for three days in the first case, and four in the second, then two expiations for oaths become obligatory. Each expiation consists of feeding ten needy persons, or clothing them, or emancipating a slave. If one is unable to do so, then they must fast for three consecutive days for each expiation.
