The answer

"The interest on deposits in usurious banks is unlawful (haram), and it must be given as charity for the general welfare of Muslims, such as to the poor and the needy. It is not permissible for the owner of the deposit to spend it on his own needs, or those of his family or friends, unless they are poor. The aforementioned colleague's action is wrong, and he must spend an equivalent amount for the poor. The responsibility also falls upon you if your friend does not return the money, in which case you are obligated to give an equivalent amount. The deposit must be withdrawn from the usurious bank immediately, as keeping the money there leads to involvement in usury."
